Is settling in the USA worth it for an Indian?

USA is not the same country once it was. Now It is a land of hard work and no time for vacation. Only better benefit is whenever you get accident you are automatically transported to any nearest hospitals, emergency response is much better than India, You will definitely need to learn how to drive and own a car in US. Insurance and maintenance are required. Taxes is the worst comparing to all countries, it will drain you and rent is very vexpensive in all states except Texas, Dallas, the cheapest city you can find in US, but comparing to rents in india it is still expensive. You will have hard time to save your hard earned money. The system is designed in such a way that you will spend every dime you make in America. If you dont…they will make sure to setup some legal case against you and make you spend money in US and go back to India with all hope lost. Yes..discrimination is widespread. They may understand your culture..but they do not care for us. Solution? Be professional and work. And dont care about them either. And if you are saving money in India…save it and stay. Do not come with family to US. Just visit as tourists and go back home. That way you will experience it and enjoy Indian culture and family support back home. Anyways, I wish you well.

Every country has its own problems. Some people like (means really like not just respect or something) the US culture and way of living and some don’t. Everything is very organized. Medical care is pretty expensive.
People are nice but in a totally different way. But one must also realize that people are (and like to be) pretty independent. Yes, they will hold door or say thank you for every little thing but if you are sick these are not the people who will take leave and spend time with you. I have heard a person say “My parents want to live with me but I don’t want to live with a bunch of old people!” and I commonly see two old people in a house just living together. I have seen 70+ aged people work for a living… (they are usually pretty fit).
Travelling to work and for most part work itself is much simpler in the US but one must keep in mind that whatever they pay is for living a decent life in the US. Unless you are planning on coming back to India there is no monetary benefit at all as far as I can see.
There is the issue of Language and ones attachment to it… Other such intangibles…

Unless you have a super high paying job, you cannot settle in the US and enjoy the Americanism! You have to be a hard worker! You may not be able to let your spouse leave the job and stay at home! Taxing system is insanely cruel. IRS (Internal Revenue Service) has put so many restrictions on the middle class that they pay a lot more of their earning to the Govt in the form of taxes. If you run a home business cash transactions are illegal, unlike India! In India you keep 100% of your profits, deceive the Govt by showing tax returns well under the taxing limits and pay almost nothing, not so with America! You pay tax on every single penny you earn!
Its impossible that you have a cash of $10,000 lying around!
Day to day life expenses (grocery, food, clothing etc) take away a large chunk of the earnings!
Health insurance is a terrible thing! If you go to the doctor for a mild pain in the chest and you are found having no cardiac related issues, chances are you will have a heart attack after seeing the medical bill!
I can add at least 50 more reasons why its dangerous to settle in US if you have less income!
BTW there is a bright side to this!
Middle class is so cash striped in US, people start using their brains to become reach, they invent ideas, start up businesses, become millionaires, live lavish life, thats Americanism is all about! Inventions, super hard work, honesty...and surprisingly enough, it pays! Hugely!

There are many dimensions to look at where you want to settle. I feel that I am fully qualified to answer this question as I have spent considerable number of years in both the locations
1.At home vs outsider: somehow I get the feeling at home in India but always felt that the whole American experience is an outsider experience. I stayed in full-Indian places such as New Jersey, California as well as remote places such as Iowa and South Dakota. It was an OK feeling being in NJ, CA but definitely depressing/outsider type feeling in other places. The native people are nice (don’t have complaints against anybody) but it is just that feeling.
2.Job/Work environment: The work environment is India is a lot more jovial compared to a very monotonous work place in US. Most of the time people are worried abut losing jobs which is not the case in India.
3.Salary/Net: You may feel that you are earning a lot by converting to Rupees but your net (if you a single earner) is meagre as per American standards. Many of friends aren’t sending their kids to Ivy Leagues because they can’t afford the fee. In India, if you get good salary, you get the king feeling.
4.Cultural: This is an important aspect which made me move back from USA. Irrespective where you live in USA, your kids are Americans. They may have a few Indian traits such as able to understand Indian language etc but you lose them forever to another culture and tradition.
5.Definiton of success//Life’s end goal: This is a very important aspect an Indian parent is supposed to impart to his children but rarely do. The traditional western mentality is chasing money and power. The Indian mentality is to achieve spirituality. The typical American life will make you completely materialistic (mainly children) and they are after money and power. This is how success is defined in western world.
more and more when I have free time.

It’s sad that the majority of Indians follow the same life pattern (Green Card, parents looking for spouse, kid #1, kid#2, parents coming and staying for 6 months, buying a house, buying a car, buying, buying, buying….
The US offers a great opportunity to be what you want to be, integrate to a new culture and learn from a diverse pool of people. Then why settle for an average materialistic life and fall into the same patterns as everyone else? In fact, US is no more materialistic than India is. Are your life, work and travel decisions motivated by your desires and passions or by financial reasoning? Are you only centered on your own family or do you give back to the community? Do you get married for love or because you want a Green Card and a cushy life in America?
I’m not an Indian but I’ve seen friends struggle not being able to fully relate to either culture.
